“You Can Be a Communist or You Can Be an American”: Trump Marks America’s 250th Anniversary With a Defiant Call to National Identity

Before a massive crowd on the National Mall, the President cast the Semiquincentennial as a test of who America is — naming faith, freedom, individual dignity, religious liberty, and love of country as the non-negotiable pillars of the nation.

America’s 250th birthday was marked this year not only with fireworks and parades but with one of the most direct addresses of President Donald J. Trump’s presidency. Speaking before a massive crowd on the National Mall, with the Washington Monument and Capitol dome as his backdrop, the President delivered a stark message on the nature of American identity: “You can be a Communist or you can be an American.”

The remarks, delivered on the historic Semiquincentennial, were framed not as partisan rhetoric but as a fundamental test of what the nation stands for — and what it must reject.

A Clear Line in the Sand

“Two hundred and fifty years ago, our founders risked everything to create something new under the sun,” President Trump declared. “They didn’t build a system based on envy, control, or the crushing of the individual spirit. They built America on faith, freedom, individual dignity, religious liberty, and love of country. These are not suggestions. They are the non-negotiable pillars of who we are.”

“Communism promises paradise and delivers poverty, prisons, and despair. It has failed in every nation that has tried it because it denies the God-given dignity of the individual.”

Honoring the Founding Principles

The President walked the crowd through the principles he says define the American experiment: faith, freedom, individual dignity, religious liberty, and love of country — arguing that each has been steadily eroded wherever communism has taken hold, from state-enforced atheism to the imprisonment of believers and the abolition of private property.

“History has rendered its verdict,” he said. “Wherever communism has taken root, the people have suffered. Wherever the American idea has been allowed to flourish, people have risen.”

A Call to Choose and Renew

President Trump closed with a direct challenge: “You cannot serve two masters. You cannot claim to love America while embracing an ideology that seeks to tear down everything that makes her exceptional. The choice is clear. You can be a Communist or you can be an American.”

The crowd answered with chants of “USA!” as celebrations continued into the evening with a fireworks display over the National Mall, capping a day officials described as a defining statement of American identity at the quarter-millennium mark.

AMMWEC Marks the Milestone

The address resonated well beyond Washington. Leaders of the American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC) released their own statements honoring America 250, tying the President’s message directly to the organization’s interfaith mission.

America’s 250th birthday is more than a celebration — it is a reminder of who we are and what we must protect.

At Mount Rushmore, President Trump delivered a powerful message: “You can be a Communist or you can be an American.”

America was founded on faith, freedom, individual dignity, religious liberty, and love of country. These sacred freedoms have given immigrants like me the blessing and privilege of becoming proud Americans.

As we celebrate America 250, let us teach our children gratitude, patriotism, and respect for the values that make this nation the greatest country on Earth.

At AMMWEC, we are proud to celebrate the diversity that strengthens our nation and the shared values that unite us.
