AMMWEC’s Anila Ali Raises Foreign Influence Concerns Following London Palestine Fundraiser

Dr. Anila Ali, President and CEO of the American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC), issued a public statement on X responding to news that actress Mahira Khan had joined the British Pakistani community in London for a fundraising event in support of Palestinian humanitarian relief. In her post, Ali used the occasion to call for closer scrutiny of what she described as foreign influence campaigns extending beyond traditional political and religious organizations.

Ali argued that public figures, entertainers, artists, and designers who have expressed support or sympathy for groups designated as terrorist organizations, or for governments considered hostile to the United States, deserve particular attention when they are invited to the U.S. for paid appearances and cultural events. She said organizers and policymakers “should carefully consider” whether such engagements risk normalizing extremist ideologies, and called for greater transparency around foreign funding, compensation, and compliance with U.S. financial and tax law.

Ali’s statement went on to raise concerns about the continued political engagement of some immigrant communities in the domestic politics of their countries of origin. She said that while individuals have the right to maintain cultural and familial ties abroad, questions arise when U.S.-based organizations function primarily as fundraising or advocacy arms for foreign political movements, particularly those whose platforms she characterized as promoting anti-American, antisemitic, extremist, or authoritarian views.

In the same post, Ali tagged several Pakistani entertainers and public figures alongside the hashtags associated with their names, and separately tagged the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She also made a broader claim that the American-raised children of some immigrant families have been seen “raising Hamas’s flags” and burning U.S. flags at demonstrations, though she did not cite specific incidents or evidence in the post.

Anila Ali acknowledged that immigrants have every right to maintain cultural and family ties with their countries of origin. However, she argued that concerns arise when U.S.-based organizations primarily function as fundraising, organizing, or advocacy arms for foreign political movements, particularly if those movements promote anti-American, antisemitic, extremist, or authoritarian ideologies.
